PTSD

I never understood what PTSD was untell I read this book. Now I realize how it can tear people apart from the inside. I mean there's been stuff that eats at me from time to time, that i though was bad. I couldn't even imagine how painful it is to watch your family die right in front of you. It makes sence to me that they just want to forget everything they saw.

  1. I completely agree that the Great Death was a grave tragedy that caused many native Alaskans to become diagnosed with PTSD. If I were placed in the same situation I am not sure I would have been strong enough to deal with my feelings instead of masking them through alcohol. Alaskan natives must realize, however that it was their decision to ignore the Great Death through alcohol consumption which has in turn caused a chain of abuse. Alaskan Native's must forgive themselves and their relatives and move forward as a united force that is proud of their heritage. Accepting their past and making a conscious effort to better their future.

  2. They should also make the conscious effort to deal with their various issues through communication. Im sure their feelings of being alone after the great death helped pushed them into alcohol abuse, and by communicating with one another they can see that they are not the only ones suffering. It is not the only thing that should be done to fight alcoholism, but it is an important factor.

  3. While I was reading it seemed to me that the Yup'ik people made a silent pact to not talk about the Great Death. I could not imagine losing my family or friends and not being able to talk about it. I dont understand how everyone began drinking because they believed it would solve their problem. Wouldnt there be someone to notice it was only making it worse? If only there had been someone that they could trust to talk to about what they were going through. It probably would have been easier for them to move on with their life and not convert to Christianity.
