The Evolution of Earth

Throughout today's studies, I found myself questioning the idea of life on other planets. There are so many more galaxies out there, and we just learned an idea of how Earth was created...who's to say that hasn't happened in one of those other galaxies? Unfortunately, we may never know the answer to that question.

Secondly, according to the information learned today, water got to Earth via comets containing ice. I studied this a little deeper and discovered that if water arrived by comets alone, MILLIONS of comet impacts would be required. Though this is not an unreasonable number, I can't help but wonder....is it possible that we will experience MILLIONS of comets impacting Earth again? If so, how long will it be until that day comes?

Lastly, I enjoyed hearing about the creation of the moon. I didn't realize that the composition of the moon was so abnormal. After further studying, I see that some believe that the impact made on Earth after the crash caused the large tilt in the axis, which is responsible for Earth's different seasons. Just something to think about!

  1. After watching the video I also find it interesting that there could be other planets with life on it. If there is other life in the universe, I wonder what they look like and how they act. It’s crazy to think about that there could be. During the video I thought we were very lucky how earth survived the collision with another planet, and wondered if earth didn’t and the other planet did, would it be like earth is today? I guess it doesn’t really matter now since earth survived and all. I also find it interesting that there was once an earth without anything on it, no continents and no life. I think it would be fun to travel back in time and explore the earth years ago when it looked so different then it does today.

  2. I was thinking the same thing about water after the video we watched, about the water. I know humans have only been a round for a "few seconds" compared to everything else but I wonder what are the chances of something catastrophic happening in our lifetime. I always wonder if the comets came gradually and little by little we accumulated water. Or if it happened in a relatively short time, which I guess could explain why the dinosaurs died out.

  3. I also agree with the idea that there is other life out there. Simply because for how vast the universe is. No one really knows exactly how big the universe so for some to think there is only one planet in the universe that can support life like earth is nuts. There has to be more life and planets out there just like Earth. Even though it did take many events in Earths history for us to be here, who's to say it it can't happen somewhere else in the universes. During last weeks class I found all the events in Earth's history to be amazing like the frozen comets and meteors that brought water and other minerals to earth amazing. Its crazy to think that without something as simple as a stromatolite we would not be here today.

  4. I can wrap my head around there being living organisms on other planets but I have trouble believing that they would be anything like humans or even animals. The way our planet was formed to create an atmosphere that humans could survive on was so hit and miss. All these events had to happen just so for it to be even a possibility. Then again who is to say that organisms would not evolve to be able to live in what to us would be a toxic environment.

  5. That is something very interesting to think about, organisms being able to live in what to us is a toxic environment. And who is to say that this is not true. Mabye, somewhere out there in the universe, there are other planets where life forms live in an environment that would kill us in secounds. Mabye, there are even planets with life forms that make humans seem as intelligent as a clump of rocks. Not saying that this is the case, becuase so many intricate factors had to occur just for Earth to form, but there is a possibility...
