Expedition Earth: UAF Fall 2010: Evolution of Earth

Expedition Earth: UAF Fall 2010: Evolution of Earth: "While watching the videos today in class I thought of how we were talking about how theories have been disproven and are, basically, forever..."

I think you have a very good point about the earth and theories. I think that we as humans are always trying to answer questions that we do not know the answer to. It is in our natural curiousity to try to answer such questions. Theories are great and all but sometimes I feel like they are pointless because some questions you are never going to find the answer to such as how the earth began, when it began etc.

  1. I agree with Elisha. There is no way we will ever know for sure how the earth was formed. We can formulate all these theories and "prove" them, but how much proof do we really have? We just have ideas and the fact that they are possible. We will never really know exactly how the earth formed and exactly how we got here. It is impossible. We can only make an educated guess.

  2. I too agree with Elisha and support her arguement. Like you guys said "there is no way we will ever know for sure how the earth was formed". Thats why there are so many theories on how it may have been created. If we knew exactly how it was created there wouldn't be so many theories.

  3. But would we really want to know exactly why the earth was created? It would take out the whole mystery of our existence, which would diffently make things less interesting and less magical...(magical sounds corny but everyone knows its true) Plust, lots of jobs. We pay a lot to the guys who come up with theories. And they make jobs for others
Plus, its not like there's anything wrong with our theories. It jsut proves that us humans, we like to think, and we like to think creativly. We are also very curious about our existence, and every little knew thing we find out about our planet is usually prety cool/interesting/relevant to why we are here. SO even if it is pointless to wonder, we can find new ideas that might branch off of a pointless theory that turns into a not so pointlesss theory, or maybe an advancement of our culture. You never know.

  4. But knowing has to have a value. Just as you value your life and family. So should we value our existance of being. Weather it is theory or faith. Scientist live off of theory that would represent fact. That fact has value to add to future existance. True the mystery is magical but as said finding the answer with our complex thoughts is worth the effort in theory for future generations to coexist together. Maybe we wernt meant to find out but it is sure fun trying.

  5. Theories about the creation of Earth are always changing and evolving, so it may seem somewhat pointless to try and figure out something I'm not sure we will ever understand. Or at least fully understand. Yet, as humans we are naturally curious about the world around us, and it makes no sense to not utilize this curiosity. We have helped to better out world and discover many interesting facts because of it. Besides, isn't it often about the journey, not the destination. Which, relating to Earth creation, could be interpreted as enjoy the process of discovering all you can about Earth creation for the sheer joy of discovery, not because you feel you must find an answer.
