nallunguarluku with regard to the missionaries

I find the teaching nallunguarluku," to pretend it didn't happen" to be a very troubling teaching and the fact that the missionaries used it as a way of gaining control over the natives even more troubling. The whole idea behind bottling up emotions and pretending something didn't happen is very unhealthy and leads to all kinds of suppressed anger and inner turmoil. Beings a Christian myself I find it unsettling that the Christian missionaries promoted this bottling up of and said that their ancestors were in hell and to not speak of them. I feel as though the missionaries should have been promoting them talking about their issues and using companionship and god as a way to work through them. This is a very eye opening read. Still reading...

  1. But I think that the Alaskans would not want to necessarily talk about their problems to the missionaries, even if they wanted to. It would be hard to, after what they had been through. Maybe I am wronge about that, but I dont believe christianity should have been forced on these people, they should have had the choice.

  2. i agree that they should have had the choice and the whole concept of missionaries and forcing religion on people is just ridiculous. I also understand that they may not have wanted to talk about it to the missionaries, but even if the missionaries weren't who they went to to talk about it, i feel as though the missionaries should have been promoting talking. But i'm not saying that would be an ease feat.

  3. It is very dangerous to keep your feelings locked up. That leads to depression and anger, and also many times abuse and even death.
I agree, the missionaries should not have force their religion on the Alaskans.

  4. I agree that the missionaries were to forcefull with their beliefs. It seems like they judged the native culture and way of life to be wrong without ever really taking the time to understand it. Just because the native lifestyle and beliefs did not mirror their own did not make them better or worse.
